Bob and Sharon's Glorious Adventures

Our First Assignment - On the Road

We are up early and finish packing all the little last minute items.

.

We're off. Coming down the driveway there is scrapping noise like we are dragging. We do set low and occassionally drag the exhaust pipe but this is ridiculous! When we stop at the Young Harris post office I'll inspect the problem. Inspection shows that the bracket on the pipe has broken and the pipe is about an inch above the ground. This calls for a stop at Georgia Mountain RV. Herb wired the pipe up in a temporary fashion so we could get on the road. After a quick stop at storage to drop some things off and a stop at Zaxby's in Blairsville for drinks, we pick up US 64 outside Murphy, NC and we are finally away.

It was a pleasant drive through the Ocoee River Gorge. The Ocoee was the site of the whiter water events for the 1996 Olympics. We exited the Ocoee near Cleveland, Tennessee and before reaching Chattanooga we passed through Ooltewah. This called for a stop at the Little Debbie outlet in Collegedale, TN

After taking on provisions and fuel we push on. Beyond Chattanooga we were rolling and enjoyng the countryside. Sometime after Pulaski, Tn we decided it was getting time to stop. We elected to stop at the David Crockett State Park near Lawrenceburg instead of pushing on to the Passport America RV park near Savannah, TN. This was a mistake. The campground office was closed and we needed to get a camp site assignment from the campground host. No one was at the host camp site. A nearby camper told us the host was making rounds and would be right back. We wasted a half an hour waiting. With no sign of a host we decided to continue on west. When we reached Savannah, TN we followed the directions to the Rv park but could not find it. We drove up and down the road several times before giving up. We returned to town and camped in the local Wal*Mart parking lot. Initially it was noisy, we seemed to be at the turn around point for the local "drag", but it soon quieted and we slept well.
